As the due date gets closer and closer, we're focused on 2 main things - getting house (and us!) ready for the baby and having as much "just couple" time as possible! We both love traveling and seeing what the world has to offer. Now that I'm far enough along that plane travel isn't appealing, we have chosen some quick, somewhat local, trips to do when we have a nice weekend to get away. Last weekend was one of those. I took off work on Friday and Thursday night, Mike and I drove down to Newport, RI for a mini-vacation.
This little coastal town has tons of great things to experience. We've both been there before, but this was our first trip there together. Thursday after work, we drove down and just relaxed for the night to get ready for a busy Friday. Friday morning, we had a small breakfast at our Inn then set out on foot to explore Newport.
Our first stop was the visitors center, a couple of blocks from the Inn, to get some info and maps. Then, we headed towards the beginning of the Cliff Walk, stopping as we went along to hit some of the
historical Newport by foot stops. One of the sites on this tour was the
Viking tower. It's origin is a mystery and there are lots of theories and legends as to who might have built it.

From our hotel, wandering around to the historic sites, it was probably about a mile and a half to the beginning of the Cliff Walk. It's a scenic walk along the cliffed shoreline of Newport. On one side, ocean, on the other side, beautiful mansions. Obviously, a nice place for a stroll. Part of the Cliff Walk is the 40 Steps. We walked down those for a closer look of the waves crashing against the rocks.

One of the most magnificent mansions is the Breakers (seen below). I've actually toured it twice (once just after moving to Boston and another time when my parents came to visit) so we just saw it from the outside this time, right along the Cliff Walk.

Along the Cliff Walk, we even stopped a while to watch some of the surfers enjoying the nice day.
After a couple of miles of the Cliff Walk, we hopped out and walked to one of the mansions - Marble House, a "cottage" built by members of the Vanderbilt family in the 19th century. Unfortunately, photos aren't allows of the interior, so here are a couple of exterior views.
That's me standing on the porch.

My little feet were getting pretty tired at this point (one of the other joys of my pregnancy is that my feet have gotten sensitive and get pretty tender with lots of walking) and we were starving. Unfortunately, all the restaurants are located in the middle of the town, much closer to where we started the cliff walk, so we walked the two miles back to that area and tiredly enjoyed looking at many of the other grand houses on Bellevue Ave.
Once we got there, we found a great place to eat and had a great big, long lunch. After that, it was back on our feet to walk the last mile back to our hotel where we had a much needed rest before we went out for dinner. All in all, we must have walked at least 7 or 8 miles. And I got through it....not bad for a 28 week (7 month) pregnant lady!
The only down side to the day was our aching feet and my annoying sciatic nerve. The weather was great, the sites were great and the company was great!
