(Note: I originally posted this on the 11th, as the post is dated, then realized I made a mistake and made a quick edit. Apparently, I somehow unposted it at that point and didn't notice my mistake until today, the 18th. So, if you visited the site in the last week and then noticed this odd back dated post magically appear, you're not losing your mind. Apparently, I am.)
Today is a big day at our house. It's Oliver's birthday! And not just any birthday the big 1 - 5. That's right, my little Mr. O is turning 15! To honor such a big event, Mike and I wanted to share the top 15 things we love about the big guy. It was a hard list to make since there are so many things to love about that cat, but we did our best.
15) His one black whisker. All of his whiskers are white except for one that's black. It's very cute.
14) His disproportionately small paws. For such a big cat, he's got some small, cute paws.
13) His love for his sister, Luci. He is a great kitty big brother. He likes to snuggle and groom Luci all the time. And, like any good big brother, he usually follows that love by starting a fight with her.
12) His love of human food. Oliver often sits and stares at you while you eat and moves his head from side to side. And, even though you try and convince him that he'll have no interest in the food you're eating, he'll persist until you let him try and it. And, oddly enough he usually likes it. Some of his favorites are green peas, hummus and popcorn.
11) His chest. Oliver has the absolute softest chest fur and it's so nice to pet.
10) His cross eyed look when you scratch at said chest fur. He leans into your hand and goes all doughy eyed.
9) His love of the nip. While normally above all the silly things cats are supposed to play like chasing mice or other interesting cat toys, the boy is a sucker for catnip. Give him anything with a little nip in it and he's all over it.
8) The crimps on his head. Like a boy who loves a good 80's hairstyle, Oliver's hair has natural crimps on the top of his cute noggin'.
7) His facial expressions. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a picture of Oliver's face is millions. He is very expressive and there's usually no doubt how the big guy's feeling about something when he flashes you a look.
6) His grunts. When Oliver is peacefully laying down (which is most of the time), he'll give cute little grunts when you pet him.
5) His love of comfort. The boy has good taste. Every time Mike buys himself a super comfy chair or super fluffy\soft blanket, Oliver rarely gives anyone else a chance to enjoy it. He swoops in and claims it as his own. Luci has taken his example as well. If there are 3 throw blankets on the couch in our living room, Mike and I are lucky if we get to use half of one of them.
4) His party animal instincts. Oliver loves to be in the middle of the party. If there are a group of people clustered in the living room, he wants to sit down and be in the middle of the circle. The tough part about that is, at the same time, he pretty much doesn't like anyone but us. So, he'll sit there and be really annoyed at all of these people and make very boisterous unhappy noises if anyone dares to touch him or even just come too close to him.
3) His powerful lungs. If people at our parties think that our little party animal is loud, then they should come and accompany him to see the vet. While taking him to the vet is definitely not on my list of favorite things to do, I'm always in awe of the psychotic sounds that come out of that animal. Just the vet simply being in the same room with him will set him off and folks in the waiting room (and within a mile radius) are in for a treat - the lovely sounds of a screaming cat. Seriously, even the vet gives him the prize for being the loudest patient.
2) His purr. He has the deepest, loudest purr. It's my favorite thing to hear when he's laying next to me at night. I often put my ear right up to his belly so I can drown out the noise of the world around me.
1) His loyalty. He's a momma's boy. Always has been and always will be. It's me he wants to sit next to on the couch at night and me he wants to snuggle next to in bed. Mike's a close 2nd. Dylan's a very far 3rd (Oliver will come around to truly love him eventually, I know).
I'm a very lucky gal to have had Oliver by my side for the last 15 years. Through college, moving across the country, finding my way in this life as an adult, buying my first and second home, finding and marrying the love of my life and having my first kid, Oliver's been right by me through it all. And, even though it irritates me to no end when he wakes me in the middle of the night to let me know he's there, I am always glad he's there. He's a great pal. We love ya' Mr. O!
