Summer Vacation Part Dos - Glacial Falls and the Kanc

Okay, so after reviewing some more of our pictures, I do remember what we did the first part of the week other than relax.  We spent some time exploring our NH town and doing a driving tour of the Kancamangus highway.

The week before we left, I did a little research on events going on in the area to give us some fun options of things to do on our week off.  While do

ing so, I came across some articles mentioning a "secret" waterfall in Thornton (our town).  Apparently, there was a park in the area at some time called Glacial Park and one of its main attractions is Glacial Falls.  The park went bust and the land around it has since been purchased and the falls are located on private land.  However, apparently there are laws that state that banks of rivers are public property. So, I decided to take Mike on a trip there and check it out.

It ended up that the banks really weren't conducive to walking on them so we kind of trespassed just a little bit to sneak a peak at the falls.  Whoops!  I felt really bad about that and wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible, so I whipped out the camera, took a few shots and bolted.  It's a shame the place isn't available for all the public to see...it really is quite an impressive falls.

Glacial Falls

After not getting caught in our illegal activities, we headed towards the town of Lincoln, taking the scenic route.  I'm glad we did because we got to see this nice vista off one of the bridges on the road.  There'd been a lot of rainfall in the area so the water ways were quite impressive.

The Kancamangus Highway starts in Lincoln, NH.  This is about a 15 minute highway drive from our place.  Loon Mountain is off the "Kanc" in Lincoln and one of the mountains where we enjoy skiing in the winter.  However, a lot of folks that have been in New England in the fall know the Kanc because it is THE place to go leaf-peeping.  That's exactly why I have avoided it during that time period...too much traffic!  So, Mike took me on it for this nice summer day to see some of its sights.

It's a very scenic and enjoyable drive in any season.  We stopped to see Rocky Gorge and Falls Pond which are next to each other and right on the highway.

It rained on and off all that day but we managed to have a fun time and still enjoy the great outdoors in between the showers.  Plus, the low, wispy clouds gave us some really cool views around the mountains.

MOOSE!!

Upon our arrival to NH Friday night, I went to open the windows for some fresh air while Mike was unloading the car.  Much to my surprise, when I drew back the curtains, I saw two moose!  I screamed to Mike in excitement and he quickly grabbed his camera from the trunk.  It was both of our first up close and personal moose experience!  Ever since I moved to New England and almost peed my pants laughing when I saw my first "Moose Crossing" sign, I've been anxiously awaiting the day I would actually come across one of the huge creatures.  In Mike's 31 years here, this is the first he's seen as well.  So, it was a big moment for the two of us.  After they let us stalk them for a while, they continued their walk into the woods.
