Well, here we are. Officially in 2012. 2011 was a great year for our family and a very busy one at that. Seeing as how spawn #2 will be entering our lives shortly, I don't think 2012 will be short of adventures. I look forward to meeting this little guy and hope that I'm ready for the challenges of expanding our family of 3 to 4.
As it's customary to do this time of year, I will have to do one of those reflection\look ahead posts. But, for now, I thought I'd do a recap of the 2011 holiday season. We packed a lot in and, as this blog is a journal for me as well, I want to see it all in one spot. Plus, being 37 weeks pregnant, our New Years Eve was nothing exciting to post about (a movie and bed long before midnight) so I wanted to give something more interesting to read about
The holiday events started the day before Thanksgiving when my parents where visiting and we all went to the
Enchanted Village. The next day we hosted our very first
Thanksgiving. Not to waste any time transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas, on black Friday, we went shopping for our
Christmas tree. And, since we're zoo nuts and a kid's gotta see Santa for a photo op, we went to
Zoo Lights the next week with my in laws and Mike's niece Emily. After hosting Thanksgiving, we kept the hosting ball rolling the following weekend with our 3rd annual
Cousin's Christmas. The third weekend was
3 days of going into downtown for Mike and I to attend the Urban Nutcracker performance, my company's holiday party at the Museum of Science and then a trip to the holiday market with friends.
In addition to all the activities outside of the house, we kept the holiday spirit going when at home too. Not only did we make
ginger bread cookies but we had some daily events as well. As evidenced by all the photos posted on facebook, we had a tradition that a lot of other folks participate in as well - the Elf on the Shelf. We got our elf, Overton, last year. This year, Dylan had a great time finding him every morning when we came downstairs. He had quite the knack for it too and would often spot him before I did (Mike was the one to find his new hiding spot the most nights).
Overton, our elf, also would bring a treat from Santa every night that he would put in our advent calendar which was shaped like Santa. Every evening at dinner, Dylan would be anxious to "open Santa" to see what kind of treat he got for the day. We also tried to use it as an exercise in counting and numbers. Still a little ways to go on that front but it was a fun opportunity to try and help his knowledge there along. Santa usually held a very small toy or some candy.

On either Saturday or Sunday morning, we will try and make pancakes for breakfast. Mike gets pretty fancy when he's the chef and makes Mickey Mouse shaped ones. Adding to the fun for Christmas, he started doing snowman shaped ones as well.

Dylan also loves to paint. We hadn't done it in a while so on Christmas weekend, we brought them out for some fun. And, just to bring some holiday festivities to the mix, we did a special project with the paint. Thanks to an article on toddler craft activities (thanks Aunt Sarah), we painted on bubble wrap, pressed paper on the paint then cut out Christmas tree shapes out after the paint dried. Dylan gave them to family as a Christmas present and he was pretty proud of his creations.

Way back in my college days, when my roommate and I got our first tree, I figured out pretty quickly that having enough ornaments to properly decorate a tree costs time and money - money to buy them and time to collect enough up. Thanks to Mom and Dad, I got a big collection of cookie dough ornaments that they were ready to pass along. To this day, the ones that have survived the years still hang on my tree. Since my Mom is great at documenting things, each of the ornaments have a date on them - some dated as early as 1975! Talk about a cookie that lasts! In any case, I thought it time to start making some of our own. Dylan did such a great job with the cookie cutters on the ginger bread cookies that I knew he was ready to take on the project. So, we looked up a recipe, made up a batch of dough and cut out shapes - most of which would help to represent the year 2011 in ornaments.

I tried to convince Dylan the dough wasn't good but he couldn't resist
taking a bite. I was sure he'd get it out of his system since it wouldn't
taste good seeing as how it was mostly salt and flour. To my dismay
he wanted to eat more. Plan backfire! Gross! |
 |
If you look closely, you can see that the bottom two
ornaments are kitty paw prints. Though not thrilled about it,
Oliver and Luci got involved in the project too. |

| And, of course, a Dylan hand print. |

We also had a "2" for Dylan's age, a tulip to represent our
trip to Amsterdam, a plane for all of our family air travel
and the state of Texas for our trips (and heritage) there. |
Of course, now that the dough has been made, cut and baked, I have a tupperware full of dough ornaments that need to be painted. Who know how long it will take me to do that. Perhaps it will get done before the tree goes up next year? We'll see!
Well, that's my holiday recap. I had some other random thoughts over the last week that I also wanted to include here so I can start my next post with New Years thoughts and activities. Here goes.
Dylan big boy bed progress - still doing great. We did have to put him back in on Thursday night. Heard a thump and, thanks to our new video monitor (thanks Aunt Pam!), saw that he had fallen out of bed. Instead of letting him fall back asleep on the floor, which he was about to do, I went up and got him back on the bed and tucked in. I don't think he ever really woke up.
Our dryer works too well. It seems to be shrinking all of my clothes. I actually had to go out and buy some clothes of moo-moo proportions so I can have a couple of items to be somewhat comfortable in the next couple of weeks.
Thoughts on working the week between Christmas and New Years. The commute rocks. The quiet of the office rocks. Despite being busy, the days dragged. That did not rock. Only 4 more working days left before leave. I will be glad to say goodbye to my uncomfortable (at least during pregnancy) desk chair for the next 6 months. Sitting in it all day gets more difficult every day.
Happy New Year to all of you out there in blog land! I'm looking forward to giving you more stuff to read while you're bored in 2012.
